The quickest fix is neutralizing acid that’s already escaped. Half a teaspoon of baking soda in four ounces of water works in five to fifteen minutes. Sugar-free gum is nearly as fast without the sodium. Standing up helps immediately.

Now the part most articles skip. Heartburn is a symptom, not a diagnosis. If you’re searching how to get rid of heartburn fast at home twice a month, the remedy isn’t your problem.

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind your breastbone that happens when stomach acid flows backward into your esophagus. The muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, called the lower esophageal sphincter, normally stays shut. When it relaxes or weakens, acid escapes upward. Heartburn two or more times a week may point to GERD.

No drug names here. Ask your doctor.

What Causes Heartburn in the First Place?

Every trigger does one of two things. It relaxes that valve, or raises pressure inside your stomach.

Fatty and fried food does both. Chocolate carries caffeine and theobromine, which loosen the same muscle. Citrus and tomato arrive acidic. Alcohol relaxes the valve and irritates the lining. Carbonation expands your stomach against a door that’s already weak.

Roughly one in five Americans deals with this weekly. DelveInsight puts US reflux disease near 64 million people in 2025.

Half teaspoon of baking soda stirred into water as a fast home heartburn remedy

How Do You Get Rid of Heartburn Fast at Home?

Six work on acid. Two work on gravity. None repair anything.

Actually, a correction. Raising your bed changes the mechanics, not the anatomy.

Remedy How fast How long it holds
Baking soda in water 5–15 minutes 1–2 hours
Sugar-free gum 10–30 minutes While chewing
Staying upright Minutes While upright
Skim milk 20 minutes Then it backfires
Banana or apple 15–30 minutes Mild, short
Ginger tea 15–30 minutes Mild, short
Aloe vera juice Unclear Unclear
Raising the bed Overnight While raised

Baking Soda in Water

Half a teaspoon in four ounces of water, sipped slowly. It neutralizes acid on contact.

The catch is sodium: roughly 630 mg per dose against the American Heart Association’s 2,300 mg ceiling. Seven doses max in 24 hours, three over 60. Skip it with high blood pressure, kidney disease, or pregnancy.

Sugar-Free Gum

Chew 30 minutes after eating. Chewing doubles saliva flow, and saliva is alkaline, so you wash acid down and buffer it. A Journal of Dental Research study measured that effect.

Skip mint. Peppermint relaxes the sphincter.

Ginger Tea

Steep fresh slices in hot water. Gingerol calms inflammation.

Most articles oversell it. A 2023 study found four weeks of ginger lowered stomach burning in functional dyspepsia. But it won’t fix a weak valve.

A Small Glass of Skim Milk

This is the one I’d push back on hardest.

Milk buffers acid for twenty minutes. Then calcium and protein trigger gastrin release and acid climbs higher than before. Tytgat documented that rebound in 1975, 30 to 60 minutes later.

Heartburn twice a week? Skip milk. You’re buying twenty minutes and paying an hour.

A Banana or an Apple

Bananas sit near pH 5.7 with about three grams of fiber.

Most articles say grab the ripest one. That’s backwards. Riper bananas set off reflux more often, and roughly 5% of patients get heartburn from bananas. Try one. If it burns, cross it off.

Aloe Vera Juice

The evidence splits. A 2015 pilot trial in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine found 10 mL daily eased GERD symptoms. Franciscan Health’s clinicians say no research supports it.

Harmless if labeled for drinking. Not much help.

Staying Upright

Thirty minutes on your feet after a meal. Loosen your belt too.

Costs nothing. Works every time.

Raising the Head of Your Bed

Not pillows. Stacked pillows bend you at the waist and raise abdominal pressure.

Six to eight inches of risers under the bedposts, or a wedge. A 2020 trial found 69% who raised the bed 20 cm improved meaningfully, against 33% of controls. Then sleep on your left side.

Oats, melon and leafy greens on a table as low-acid foods that help prevent heartburn

What Keeps Heartburn From Coming Back?

Prevention beats relief, and it’s cheaper.

Eat smaller and finish your last meal two to three hours before bed. Lying down full is the surest way to earn heartburn at midnight. Quit smoking too, since nicotine weakens the valve.

Oats, melons, and leafy greens anchor the plate, along with other alkaline and high-fiber foods.

Then keep a two-week food log. Not a diet. A log. Most find two or three real triggers and keep eating everything else. Most proven non-drug strategies come down to timing, portions, and gravity. The bed setup beats anything you swallow for nighttime heartburn.

When Should You Stop Treating Heartburn at Home?

Two or more episodes a week is the line. Past that you’re managing a disease, not a bad dinner.

Go sooner for trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, or black stools. If chest pain comes with shortness of breath, sweating, or pain into your arm or jaw, call 911. Heartburn and heart attacks feel alike.

Chronic reflux is mechanical. A weak sphincter, often with a hiatal hernia, lets acid through regardless of diet. Some never feel burning and get hoarseness instead, which points toward silent reflux.

Older literature puts incomplete response to acid-suppressing medication at 30 to 40%. I watch that walk through our door in Tampa: medicated for years, still burning, never tested. Dr. Gopal Grandhige is a board-certified surgeon, and we test before we prescribe.

Tampa Bay Reflux Institute helps you eliminate reflux and GERD instead of muting it. If you’ve mastered how to get rid of heartburn fast at home and still do it weekly, talk to our team. Procedures exist that repair the valve itself, and most who need one waited years too long.

FAQs

What’s the fastest way to get rid of heartburn at home?

Half a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in at least four ounces of water usually brings relief within five to fifteen minutes by neutralizing stomach acid on contact. Sugar-free gum runs a close second and carries no sodium risk. Standing upright helps immediately. None of these hold for more than a couple of hours.

How do you get rid of heartburn fast at home at night?

Raise the head of your bed six to eight inches with risers or a wedge, then sleep on your left side. A 2020 randomized trial found 69% of patients who raised the bed by 20 cm had meaningful symptom improvement compared with 33% of controls. Stacked pillows make things worse by bending you at the waist and raising abdominal pressure.

Does milk help heartburn or make it worse?

Milk buffers stomach acid for roughly twenty minutes, then triggers rebound acid production that often climbs higher than before you drank it. Tytgat documented acid rebounding within 30 to 60 minutes back in 1975, and the finding has held up. If you get heartburn twice a week or more, milk works against you.

Can you get rid of heartburn fast at home without medication?

Yes, for occasional episodes. Chewing sugar-free gum without mint for 30 minutes after eating roughly doubles saliva flow, which washes acid down and buffers it. Staying upright and loosening tight clothing also work within minutes. Frequent heartburn needs evaluation rather than repeated home remedies.

How often is too often for heartburn?

Two or more episodes a week is the clinical threshold for suspected GERD. DelveInsight’s epidemiology data put US reflux disease at about 64 million people in 2025, and many of them spend years on acid-suppressing medication without ever receiving pH testing or manometry.

Is baking soda safe to use for heartburn every day?

No. Each half teaspoon contains about 630 mg of sodium, and the American Heart Association recommends staying under 2,300 mg daily. Limit yourself to seven doses in 24 hours, three if you’re over 60, and stop after two weeks. Avoid it entirely with high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart failure, or pregnancy.

When is chest burning a heart attack instead of heartburn?

Heartburn and cardiac pain can feel nearly identical, which is why guessing at home is a bad idea. Call 911 if chest discomfort comes with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to your arm, neck, or jaw. Burning that follows a meal and eases with an antacid is more likely reflux, but the two overlap enough that sudden or severe chest pain always warrants emergency evaluation.

An endoscopy cannot tell you if you have reflux. It can only tell you if you have complications of GERD.

If you are unhappy with your reflux symptoms, come in and we can discuss testing and treatments that can accurately diagnose your problem.
