The home remedies for heartburn with actual research behind them are boring and free. Sleep on your left side. Stop eating three hours before bed. Chew sugar-free gum after meals. The herbal teas and supplements everyone pushes have the thinnest evidence on the list, and one of them makes reflux measurably worse.
Home remedies for heartburn are non-prescription steps you take at home to reduce stomach acid backing up into your esophagus. They include sleep position changes, meal timing and portion adjustments, chewing gum after eating, and over-the-counter options like alginates or antacids. They manage symptoms well. They do not repair a weak valve.
In our Tampa practice the same story repeats. Someone spends eight months on ginger tea and turmeric capsules, finally gets tested, and turns out to have a hiatal hernia that was never going to respond to a beverage. This piece skips prescription acid blockers. Those deserve their own article.
Herbal Remedies Get More Credit Than They Have Earned
Most herbal heartburn remedies rest on thin evidence, and one makes reflux worse. Ginger is the clearest case. A 2025 tolerability study in functional dyspepsia patients found heartburn in 12.8% of people taking ginger supplements, because gingerols stimulate acid and loosen the valve above your stomach.
Peppermint is worse. Dietary risk-factor research found drinking peppermint tea daily doubled the odds of GERD, an odds ratio of 2.00. Menthol relaxes smooth muscle everywhere, including the one ring you need staying shut.
Licorice has the strongest data here. A 2025 placebo-controlled trial of 200 adults found low-glycyrrhizin licorice improved regurgitation by day seven and heartburn by day 14. Ordinary licorice root raises blood pressure and drops potassium. On a diuretic or blood pressure medication? Skip it.
Aloe vera holds up better. A 79-person randomized trial using 10 mL of standardized aloe syrup daily for four weeks reduced heartburn, regurgitation and belching, with no dropouts.
Chamomile has zero reflux-specific trials.
Actually, that framing is not quite right. The problem is not that herbs do nothing. They soothe the burn while the mechanism stays broken.

What Else Calms Heartburn Without a Prescription?
Alginates are the strongest non-prescription option available. Derived from seaweed, they form a gel raft that floats on your stomach contents and blocks the pocket of acid collecting near the junction after meals. Imaging studies tracking labeled alginate found reflux episodes dropped from roughly 15 to around 3.5, and time to the first reflux event stretched from about 14 minutes out to 63.
The data is not unanimous. A pooled meta-analysis comparing alginates with placebo and plain antacids found no significant difference, which tells you formulation and timing matter enormously.
Baking soda works fast, and that speed is the trap. Half a teaspoon carries roughly 630 mg of sodium, and the FDA advises against using it as an antacid beyond two weeks without supervision. Anyone with high blood pressure, kidney disease or heart failure should leave it in the pantry.
Probiotics and melatonin get recommended constantly. A 2022 systematic review of dietary and probiotic interventions found the evidence sparse, with most positive results resting on one small study each.
Can Changing What You Eat Stop Heartburn?
Diet changes help, but how you eat matters more than what you eat. Every trigger-food list online gets this backwards.
The eating-behavior numbers are hard to argue with. Lifestyle research found that eating past fullness carried an odds ratio of 2.85 for GERD, and eating quickly came in at 4.06. Individual foods show far softer associations.
Some foods do earn their reputation. High-fat meals delay stomach emptying and lower valve pressure, which is also why a slow-emptying stomach makes reflux worse. Citrus, tomato and chocolate surface repeatedly in patient reports. Coffee, alcohol and peppermint loosen the sphincter.
But cutting your diet down to chicken and rice because a blog said so is a waste of good food. Track two weeks of symptoms, find your own three or four culprits, and stop there.
The alkaline diet gets credit it has not earned. Studies showing benefit point to the eating pattern, not to any shift in body pH.
Eating Habits Beat Food Lists
Portion size is the lever most people skip. Smaller dinners, less fat at night, your own two or three triggers instead of a generic list of twenty.
Timing does more work than either. The NIDDK recommends finishing meals two to three hours before lying down, and a case-control study found a dinner-to-bed gap under three hours carried 7.45 times the odds of GERD versus waiting four hours or more.
Speed matters and nobody mentions it. Put the fork down between bites.

Your 2026 At-Home Heartburn Routine, Step by Step
Ranked by evidence, not popularity.
- Sleep on your left side. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis confirmed left-side sleeping cuts esophageal acid exposure time and speeds clearing. Right side is the worst position you can pick.
- Raise the head of your bed six to eight inches with blocks or a wedge. A review of five controlled trials put the risk ratio for symptom relief at 2.1. Stacking pillows bends you at the waist and does nothing.
- Stop eating three hours before bed. See that 7.45 odds ratio again.
- Chew sugar-free gum for 30 minutes after meals.
- Lose weight if you carry it around the middle. Abdominal pressure pushes stomach contents upward. It helps. It will not fix a hiatal hernia.
- Loosen your waistband. Same principle, zero effort.
- Quit smoking. Nicotine relaxes the valve directly.
Notice what is missing. Anything you drink, and anything in a supplement aisle.
Does Milk Help Heartburn?
Milk buys you 20 to 30 minutes and then makes things worse. Calcium and protein buffer acid briefly, then stimulate gastrin, which drives a rebound in acid output. Whole milk is worst, since one cup carries about 8 grams of fat that slows stomach emptying and loosens the valve.
Want the calcium? Drink skim, keep it under 8 ounces, and treat it as a between-meal snack. A big glass at bedtime is the worst move available, because the rebound peaks while you lie flat.

Chewing Gum Is the Most Underrated Remedy Here
Gum works, and the effect is measurable. In a study published in the Journal of Dental Research, 31 people with reflux symptoms ate a reflux-provoking meal, then chewed sugar-free gum for half an hour. Esophageal acid exposure dropped by a third, from a median of 5.7% of the two-hour window to 3.6%.
Saliva is alkaline, and swallowing pushes acid back down. Two mechanisms, one stick of gum. Keep it sugar-free, and avoid mint given what menthol does to that valve.
Baking Soda vs. Antacids: The Real Difference
Baking soda neutralizes acid faster than anything in your kitchen and carries the steepest cost for repeat use.
| Option | How it works | Speed | Safe for daily use |
| Baking soda | Neutralizes acid chemically | Under 5 minutes | No. High sodium, two-week ceiling |
| Standard antacids | Calcium, magnesium or aluminum salts neutralize acid | 5 to 15 minutes | Occasional use only |
| Alginates | Forms a physical raft over the acid pocket | 10 to 30 minutes | Yes, including pregnancy |
Antacids work best an hour after eating or when symptoms hit. All three interfere with how other medications absorb, so space them out and tell your prescriber what you take.
Home Remedies for Heartburn During Pregnancy
Heartburn in pregnancy comes from hormones relaxing the valve and a growing uterus pressing upward, and it often worsens as pregnancy progresses. The useful part is that the highest-evidence remedies are also the safest.
Left-side sleeping, head-of-bed elevation, smaller meals and an early dinner all apply. Alginates are licensed for use in pregnancy and studied in pregnant patients specifically. Baking soda is a poor choice because of the sodium load, and every herbal supplement needs clearance from your obstetrician. Watch for hoarseness and throat clearing too, since reflux reaching the throat gets blamed on allergies constantly.

When Do Home Remedies Stop Being Enough?
Two weeks. Run the routine above for two full weeks, and if you are still burning more than twice a week, home remedies for heartburn have done all they can.
The part nobody tells you is that reflux is not primarily an acid problem. It is mechanical. The valve either closes or it does not, and the most common reason it does not is a hiatal hernia pulling the junction out of position. The 2024 SAGES hiatal hernia guidelines address surgical repair for exactly this reason. Diet does not move anatomy.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige is a board-certified surgeon, and the patients who frustrate him most arrive after six years of over-the-counter management carrying damage that testing would have caught in year one. Testing comes first. Then real options, from a small magnetic device around the esophagus to rebuilding the valve.

FAQs
What are the best home remedies for heartburn?
The home remedies for heartburn with the strongest research are sleep position, meal timing, and chewing gum after meals. A 2023 systematic review found left-side sleeping reduces esophageal acid exposure, and a case-control study found a dinner-to-bed gap under three hours carried 7.45 times the odds of GERD. Herbal teas and supplements have far weaker evidence.
How long should I try home remedies for heartburn before seeing a doctor?
Two weeks. If you follow sleep position, meal timing, portion and gum changes for two full weeks and still get heartburn more than twice a week, home remedies have reached their limit. Persistent symptoms usually point to a mechanical problem like a hiatal hernia, which needs testing rather than another diet change.
Does sleeping on your left side really reduce acid reflux?
Yes. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis found that left lateral sleeping significantly lowers esophageal acid exposure time and shortens how long acid sits in the esophagus, compared with sleeping on the right side or on your back. Right-side sleeping performs worst of all positions.
Is baking soda safe to use for heartburn?
Baking soda is safe for occasional use in healthy adults but not as a routine remedy. Half a teaspoon carries roughly 630 mg of sodium, and the FDA advises against using it as an antacid for more than two weeks without medical supervision. Avoid it entirely with high blood pressure, kidney disease or heart failure.
Can chewing gum stop heartburn?
Chewing sugar-free gum for 30 minutes after a meal reduces acid in the esophagus. In a study published in the Journal of Dental Research, 31 people with reflux symptoms cut esophageal acid exposure from a median of 5.7% to 3.6% of the two hours after eating. Skip mint flavors, since menthol relaxes the valve above the stomach.
Does drinking milk help heartburn?
Milk gives 20 to 30 minutes of relief and then makes heartburn worse. Calcium and protein buffer acid briefly, then trigger a rebound in acid production. Whole milk is worst because one cup carries about 8 grams of fat that slows stomach emptying and loosens the valve.
Will home remedies for heartburn work if I have a hiatal hernia?
They will reduce symptoms but will not fix the cause. A hiatal hernia pulls the junction between the esophagus and stomach out of position, and no dietary change moves anatomy back. The 2024 SAGES guidelines address surgical repair for this reason.
