Yes, Tums work for acid reflux. They neutralize acid that’s already burning your esophagus, and relief shows up within 5 to 15 minutes. The catch is how long it holds. In the esophagus, where the pain actually lives, calcium carbonate covers you for roughly an hour before the burn returns.

So the honest answer isn’t yes or no. It’s “yes, for about 60 minutes.”

Tums are a chewable antacid made from calcium carbonate, a base that raises the pH of acid sitting in your stomach and throat. They stop an episode that has already started. They don’t slow acid production, repair the valve at the base of the esophagus, or heal tissue that acid has already damaged.

I’ve treated people in Tampa who carried a roll in every coat pocket for a decade. None got better. They got comfortable.

What Does an Antacid Actually Do?

An antacid neutralizes acid that already escaped. It doesn’t stop your stomach from making more. That one distinction explains where these tablets help and where they quit.

Your stomach sits around a pH of 1 to 2. Calcium carbonate is alkaline, so chewing it puts a base right where the burning is. For occasional heartburn, nothing else works that fast.

StatPearls, the clinical reference hosted by the National Library of Medicine, describes antacid use as restricted to mild intermittent reflux with heartburn. Not chronic reflux. Not nightly symptoms.

That same reference puts weekly heartburn across North America at 18% to 28% of adults, with roughly a quarter reporting it daily.

How Long Does Tums Relief Really Last?

About an hour, and less on an empty stomach, since the tablet clears out faster with no food holding it there.

Antacids win the sprint and lose everything else.

If reflux hits once after a heavy dinner, an hour is plenty. If it wakes you at 2am and you’re still burning at 4am, you’ll chew another dose. Then another. That pattern is why this article exists.

The Frequency Line Most People Cross Without Noticing

Two days a week, for several weeks running. That’s the line between occasional heartburn and a condition.

Cross it and you’re no longer treating a bad meal. You’re managing chronic acid reflux with a product built for bad meals.

Daily calcium carbonate carries its own baggage. Constipation tops the list. Calcium also accumulates, and the adult upper limit sits near 2,000 to 2,500 mg a day. Chew tablets all day, add a supplement, eat a calcium-rich diet, and you’re near that ceiling. Calcium blocks absorption of other medications too, including thyroid replacement and some antibiotics.

Actually, that framing isn’t quite right. The tablets aren’t the real danger. The delay is.

Better Options for Acid Reflux

Nothing below replaces antacids for speed. Everything below beats them for duration.

Option Starts working Holds for What it fixes
Calcium carbonate antacid 5 to 15 minutes About 1 hour Acid already in the esophagus
H2 blocker 60 to 90 minutes 9 to 12 hours Acid production, partially
Proton pump inhibitor 2 to 4 days About 24 hours Acid production, heals the lining
Valve repair procedure Immediately Years, in selected patients The failed barrier itself

Notice what the top three rows share. They all manage acid. None touch the reason acid is getting where it shouldn’t.

Lifestyle Changes That Hold Up

The 2022 American College of Gastroenterology guideline gives weight loss its strongest rating for reflux, a strong recommendation backed by moderate evidence. Raising the head of your bed and leaving two to three hours between dinner and bedtime help too, on thinner evidence.

Those three earn your effort. The next part is where I part ways with almost every reflux article online.

The Trigger Food Advice I Push Back On

The ACG rates avoiding trigger foods as a conditional recommendation supported by low-quality evidence. Lab studies found coffee, caffeine, citrus, and spicy food had little to no measurable effect on lower esophageal sphincter pressure. The guideline steers toward personal symptom tracking over blanket elimination lists.

Giving up tomatoes for six years while your valve keeps failing is a bad trade. Track what bothers you specifically, cut that, and stop punishing yourself over somebody’s printout.

Alcohol sits in a similar spot. It relaxes the sphincter in the moment, but reviews have found limited evidence that quitting improves pH readings or symptoms on its own.

When Does Reflux Need a Specialist Instead of a Pharmacy?

When medication stops working, or when it works and you still need it forever.

A Cedars-Sinai survey of 71,812 people found 30.9% had reflux symptoms in the previous week. Among those on a daily proton pump inhibitor, 54.1% still reported breakthrough symptoms. More than half, on the strongest acid medication available.

Acid suppression treats the acid, not the valve. If a hiatal hernia has pulled the junction out of position, no pill puts it back. And if your symptoms arrive as hoarseness, throat clearing, or chronic cough instead of heartburn, you may have silent reflux, which acid neutralizing barely touches.

The NIDDK estimates 5% to 15% of people with GERD go on to develop Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous change in the lining, and suggests testing after five or more years of weekly symptoms.

Trouble swallowing, food sticking, unexplained weight loss, or vomiting blood means you call someone today. Not next month.

Stop Treating a Mechanical Problem With Chalk

Reflux at its root is a one-way valve that stopped being one-way.

When that valve fails for good, the lasting fixes are structural. Rebuilding the valve with your own stomach tissue is the long-standing option. Magnetic sphincter augmentation adds a small flexible ring around the junction to help it close. For the right anatomy, the repair can be done through the mouth without incisions.

I’m not covering how we choose between those, or what testing feels like. Those calls depend on your pH study, your manometry results, and your hernia size. That’s a consult, not a blog post.

Dr. Gopal Grandhige is a board-certified surgeon, and Tampa Bay Reflux Institute exists to eliminate reflux and GERD rather than help you schedule around it.

So, do Tums work for acid reflux? For about an hour at a time, yes. If that hour is all you ever need, carry them and get on with your life. If you’ve been buying bulk packs for years, the tablets were never your problem. The valve is, and valves can be fixed.

FAQs

Do Tums work for acid reflux at night?

Tums work at night the same way they work during the day, for roughly an hour. Nighttime reflux often lasts far longer than that because lying flat removes gravity’s help. Raising the head of your bed and leaving two to three hours between your last meal and bedtime do more for overnight symptoms than another dose.

How many Tums a day is too many?

Daily use at all is the signal worth watching, not a specific tablet count. The upper limit for total daily calcium in adults sits near 2,000 to 2,500 mg depending on age, and antacid tablets count toward that total alongside supplements and food. Regular daily use can also cause constipation and block absorption of thyroid medication and some antibiotics.

Why do Tums seem to stop working after a few months?

The tablets haven’t changed. The underlying problem has usually progressed. Calcium carbonate only neutralizes acid that has already refluxed, so it can’t slow a weakening valve or a hernia that’s enlarging. Needing more tablets for less relief signals a failing mechanical barrier, not a need for a stronger antacid.

Do Tums work for acid reflux caused by a hiatal hernia?

They ease the burn temporarily, but they do nothing about the hernia itself. A hiatal hernia pulls the junction between stomach and esophagus out of position, and no medication returns it. Hernia-driven reflux typically needs imaging and testing, then a structural repair if symptoms persist.

Can Tums make heartburn worse?

Some people experience a rebound in acid production after the neutralizing effect fades, though whether that meaningfully worsens reflux symptoms is still debated among researchers. The bigger risk is masking. Steady antacid use can hide symptoms long enough to delay diagnosis of GERD, a hernia, or Barrett’s esophagus, which affects an estimated 5% to 15% of people with GERD.

Do antacids help silent reflux?

Not much. Silent reflux, also called LPR, irritates the throat and voice box and often involves non-acid components that antacids can’t neutralize. People with silent reflux frequently have no heartburn at all, which is why chewing tablets rarely resolves the hoarseness or chronic cough.

When should I see a specialist instead of taking more antacids?

Symptoms two or more days a week for several weeks warrant an evaluation. So does heartburn that persists on daily medication, since a Cedars-Sinai survey found 54.1% of people on daily proton pump inhibitors still had breakthrough symptoms. Trouble swallowing, food sticking, unexplained weight loss, or blood in vomit means seeking care immediately.

An endoscopy cannot tell you if you have reflux. It can only tell you if you have complications of GERD.
