Honey can calm a burning throat for a while. It can’t fix the valve that let acid get up there. That’s the short version, and it’s the part that matters.
Honey for acid reflux works as a coating agent. Its thickness lets it cling to the lining of the esophagus, which dulls the burn from stomach acid for a short window. A small 2024 trial found real symptom improvement with Manuka honey. Still, honey is a comfort measure, not a repair for a failing valve.
I’ve operated on people whose reflux went from annoying after pizza to a scarred esophagus. Most tried a spoonful of something first.
What honey actually does when you swallow it
Honey coats. That’s the whole mechanism, and it’s a real one.
Raw honey is thick and slow-moving, so it clings to irritated tissue on the way down. Antioxidants and antibacterial properties get cited as the reason. They’re not why your chest stops burning.
The coating buys minutes. Not hours. For occasional heartburn, minutes are enough. For chronic acid reflux or silent reflux, minutes are a rounding error.
Does honey for acid reflux actually work?
Sometimes, and mostly in mild cases.
The strongest evidence is a 2024 pilot study in Food Science & Nutrition. Thirty patients took Manuka honey or placebo for four weeks, 5 grams three times daily. Endoscopy showed improvement in 73.3% of the honey group versus 33.3% on placebo. Grade A inflammation improved at 81.8%. Grade B damage improved at 50%.
Look at the split. Honey did well on mild irritation and hit a coin flip on the worse cases.
Now the part wellness sites skip. Thirty patients. One center. Nobody has replicated it. No trial compares honey against standard treatment, and no gastroenterology society lists it in reflux guidelines. A promising pilot is a reason to keep researching, not to cancel your endoscopy.

How much honey should you take?
Five grams, roughly a level teaspoon, up to three times a day. That’s the trial dose, and there’s no reason to go past it.
Take it after meals, or 20 to 30 minutes before bed if nights are the problem. Warm water or herbal tea works if a plain spoonful turns your stomach.
One correction to advice on nearly every honey article. They say stir it into warm milk. I repeated that for years. It’s wrong. Milk buffers acid for about 20 minutes, then fat and protein drive acid output back above baseline. Whole milk is worst, since fat loosens the valve. Warm water works without the rebound.

Who should skip honey
Never give honey to a child under 12 months. Not baked into food, not stirred into water, not on a pacifier. The CDC, FDA, and American Academy of Pediatrics all agree, because honey can carry spores that cause infant botulism.
If you manage blood sugar, count it. One tablespoon holds about 17 grams of sugar. Its glycemic index sits below table sugar’s, which is small comfort. Still sugar.
Some people simply get worse on it. Honey is mostly fructose and glucose, and larger amounts can ferment, build gas, and push pressure against the valve. If your burn intensifies 30 to 60 minutes after a spoonful, believe your body and quit.
Where honey stops working
Honey does nothing to anatomy.
Reflux starts when the lower esophageal sphincter gives out, or when a hiatal hernia pulls the stomach through the diaphragm. No food repairs a mechanical failure.
| What you’re using | Relief window | Fixes the cause? |
| Honey | Minutes | No |
| Antacids | 30 to 60 minutes | No |
| H2 blockers | Several hours | No |
| Daily PPI | All day, when it works | No |
| Valve repair | Ongoing | Yes |
In a survey of nearly 72,000 adults published in Gastroenterology, 44.1% reported reflux symptoms at some point, and 54.1% of people on a daily proton pump inhibitor still had symptoms.
Half the room, on prescription acid suppression, still burning. A teaspoon of honey was never carrying that group. I won’t tell you which procedure fits you, because that answer comes from testing, not from an article. Current reflux treatment guidelines point those patients toward objective testing, then toward rebuilding the valve when anatomy demands it.

What I tell patients in 2026
Use the honey. It’s cheap and mostly harmless.
Put a two-week timer on it. Still reaching for the jar? Still hitting antacids twice a week or more? Get properly evaluated. An incisionless repair or surgery may be on the table once you’ve had pH testing and manometry. Dr. Gopal Grandhige is a board-certified surgeon, and at Tampa Bay Reflux Institute we’ve never fixed a failing valve with diet advice.
Honey for acid reflux is a comfort, not a cure. Use it that way and you’re fine. Build a treatment plan around it and you’ll lose years of esophagus you don’t get back.
FAQs
Does honey help acid reflux?
Honey can ease acid reflux symptoms briefly by coating the esophagus, but it doesn’t correct the cause. A 2024 pilot study of 30 GERD patients found endoscopic improvement in 73.3% of those taking Manuka honey versus 33.3% on placebo. No gastroenterology clinical guideline currently recommends honey as a treatment.
What is the best honey for acid reflux?
Manuka honey is the only variety with direct clinical evidence behind it. In the 2024 trial, patients with mild grade A inflammation improved at a rate of 81.8%, while those with more advanced grade B damage improved at only 50%. Any thick raw honey delivers similar physical coating.
How much honey should I take for heartburn?
The dose used in clinical research is 5 grams, about one level teaspoon, taken three times per day for four weeks. Taking more won’t improve results and adds sugar you don’t need. Stir it into warm water or herbal tea if a plain spoonful is unpleasant.
Can honey make acid reflux worse?
Yes, for some people. Honey is mostly fructose and glucose, and larger amounts can ferment in the gut, produce gas, and raise pressure against the lower esophageal sphincter. If symptoms intensify 30 to 60 minutes after eating honey, stop using it.
Is honey safe for everyone with reflux?
No. Children under 12 months should never have honey in any form, because it can carry spores that cause infant botulism. People managing blood sugar should count it as sugar, since one tablespoon contains roughly 17 grams. Anyone taking medication that affects blood glucose should ask their doctor first.
When should I stop treating reflux at home?
If you need antacids more than twice a week, or symptoms persist past two weeks of home care, it’s time for a proper evaluation. Research published in Gastroenterology found that 54.1% of patients on daily proton pump inhibitors still had symptoms, so self-treatment fails a large share of people. Untreated acid exposure can scar the esophagus over time.
An endoscopy cannot tell you if you have reflux. It can only tell you if you have complications of GERD.
